Friday 6-Pack...

June 08, 2018 by Matt Bates

This week we have some new Menzingers. These guys are hometown heroes in the scene I grew up and played music in. I am so glad to see them still touring, creating, and most importantly, thriving. We also have a throwback to old New Found Glory which came through as a request, but I am not complaining! You can catch them on their current Sick Tour along with some other pop-punk legends. We also have a new, new track from Los Angeles locals, Point North off their debut EP. This playlist also has some new surprises from Like Roses, Gold Steps, and Mood Lights! Check it out now!

Bachelor Party...

June 03, 2018 by Matt Bates

"Should we start a fight?" - My Dad.

It has been one week since my bachelor party. It is insane how fast time flies. I wait our entire lives for some moments, and in an instant, they are over. It has already been a week, and I wish I could go back to last weekend and relive the entire experience. Spending time with my family and friends is a luxury, and I often forget how special it can be.

We got off our red-eye flight from LAX to Philadelphia and immediately were reinvigorated. The sweet scent of the trash-filled air, the grit of the Philadelphia TSA, and the gray, overcast weather connected us right back to our roots; we are home. Someone pushed past us as we made our way through the terminal. They yelled something along the lines of, “Get the fuck out of my way, you pussies!” Philadelphia is a beautiful place.

A Wawa trip and a nap later and we were ready to get onto the festivities that were planned for us by friends and family. Every time Jamie and I head back to our home state of Pennsylvania; we immediately split up to see our different groups of friends and family. It is pretty incredible that I don’t see her until we meet back up at the airport days later at the end of the trip. We live together. I see here every day, but when we get back home to see our parents, we just wave goodbye and do our own thing.

I woke up from my nap on my mom’s couch and immediately had a beer. I am on vacation. It is my bachelor party weekend. I plan on being at least buzzed the entire time. Since I do not really drink anymore, I had to spend the week leading up to my bachelor party doing shots every night to rebuild my tolerance. I chatted with my mom for a while over a 10 am brew and decided to make my way over to my dad’s house. For those of you who have no idea who my father is, let me give you a quick rundown. He believes he is a 21-year-old and he also believes it is the year 1986. He usually is shirtless and wearing ripped jeans or something he found on the side of the road. He will drink you under the table and steal your woman. Motley Crue and Talking Heads are usually what is listening too. He loves to wander the neighborhood with his metal detector and can’t be caught without a beer in his had no matter what time it is. So, you can see why I would want to hang out with him immediately.

We spent the afternoon looking through his raised vegetable garden, playing frisbee, and taking down two 6-packs. The level of relaxation that we achieved was nothing short of incredible. I put my phone down and forgot about it. When was the last time you did that? I was fully immersed in the relaxation aided by the help of cheap American, canned beers.

I passed out for a long sleep sometime in the early night. We had to be up early for golf with the entire bachelor crew the next morning. Some of the bachelor party had never golfed a day in their lives. If you think my dad has golf, owns an acceptable pair of golf pants (or any pants for that matter), or knows the etiquette of golf, you’d be dead wrong. He showed up in his best-ripped jeans shorts and a case of Narragansett - safely stowed in a soft cooler of ice. We were ready to hit the links.

It is safe to say we finished all the beer and almost got in a fight on the 11th hole. By the time we reach the 11th, we were all a little drunk and taking our time aiming our shots. The foursome behind us yelled something along the lines of, “Hurry the fuck up, you drunk fucks!” None of us were having it. We were all in good moods and no one was going to stop us. All of us yelled back all the obscenities we could remember and were willing to start a fight in the middle of the course. I mean really, why would you start a fight with a group of drunk, blue collar, Philadelphia working men celebrating a bachelor party? “Fuck you, you mother fucking, fuck! I’ll shove this golf club down your throat if you say another god damn word! It’s my son’s bachelor party!” My father yelled. “Should we wait and beat the shit out of them? I got time.” My father asked all of us. I am not going to lie, there was a bit of a pause from all of us but we opted to keep the good vibes going and moved along, but not before we flipped them all of and threw shit at them for the remainder of the game. They never said another word and put up with our antics for the rest of the game.

Over the weekend, my family and friends all went golfing, drank, talked shit, and had a blast. All of my closest friends live across the country now. It was great to see those who had flown in to celebrate our upcoming wedding. For some of us, we hadn’t been home together in years, and we picked up right where we left off. These relationships are special. It is rare to find people that genuinely care about you and want to celebrate what you are doing. It is even harder to find someone who will care about you for decades to come. It is times like these where you learn who is in it for the long haul with you, and who was there for a few short bus stops.

Friday 6-Pack...

June 01, 2018 by Matt Bates

Another sunny Friday here in Southern California, and another Friday 6-Pack that powered my week. We have new music from Can't Swim. It seem like they can't stop (cheesy pun intended) putting out singles. We also have an acoustic track from the newly signed to Epitaph Records duo, This Wild Life. We also have some incredible new tracks from Pet Symmetry, Wolf Culture, Amarionette, and a super poppy one from Chief State! Check it out!

My Future Wife...

May 20, 2018 by Matt Bates

Jamie and I are Annual Passholders at Disneyland. It is our getaway from reality. We do not have any family out here in California, so we treat Disney as a second home where we feel welcomed and taken care of. When we are there, you can usually find us bouncing between parks, eating Mickey pretzels, or grabbing Fastpasses on as many rides as we can. We consider ourselves very lucky.

We have visited Disneyland so much that we sometimes come up with new ways to experience the parks. There are entire subcultures of Annual Passholders doing the same. Hidden Mickey searches are one of them. The Hidden Mickey search is awesome, and I have done it a few times. These Hidden Mickey's could be anywhere throughout the park and could be in any shape of the iconic three-circle Mickey silhouette. I have found them in the art in some of the hotels, landscaping, on castmembers, on mailboxes throughout the park, or even on some of the rides hidden somewhere in a dark corner.

This past weekend Jamie decided to spice things up by taking as many photos as possible throughout the park doing her new favorite 90's pose. The result is pretty incredible. See the silly pictures above.

This is my future wife, and I could not be more in love.

Friday 6-Pack...

May 18, 2018 by Matt Bates

Friday! Here are six new songs that got me through the week! Standouts to us are Toy Cars, Afterparty, and Limbs. Toy Cars has been a band I have been watching for a little while and their new full length 'Paint Brain' does not disappoint. Afterparty is new to me but their riffy single on this weeks list sets up the weekend just right. Limbs were brought to my attention by one of my friends who grew up with them in Florida. They have already signed to Equal Vision and have a big career in front of them in the metal scene.

We also have a catchy new single from Lake Street Dive, a slower one from folk-rock heroes Lucero, an alternative track from female-led vocal band Behind the Facade. Check it out!

Thanks, Mom...

May 13, 2018 by Matt Bates

Mom,

Thanks for allowing me to be me, challenging me to do better, and holding me accountable when I was a complete idiot. I did not know it at the time, but you were doing your best to make sure I would grow up to be a good man. I thought you were being mean by making me do my homework immediately when I got home from school. I thought you were just a tyrant when you gave us a curfew. I thought it was ridiculous how we would have to finish a list of chores before we could do anything or go out with our friends, but now I appreciate it.

I hope you have a relaxing and enjoyable Mother's Day. We wish we could be there to help you celebrate. We look forward to seeing you in a few weeks!

Love you and have a great day!

Big Red 2...

May 09, 2018 by Matt Bates

“It’s like driving a fishbowl.” - Us.

We did it. We got our van back. Who knew we were van people?

We use to live in Southern California and left for a few years to move to Nashville. During our time on the Gold Coast we bought an old Volkswagen Vanagon and loved taking it on adventures. Due to the logistics of moving, we sold the van (Big Red) before moving to Nashville. During our time in Music City, we wished we hadn’t sold Big Red and yearned for the days of drifting through beach lined roads in the sun. We loved taking cruises us the Pacific Coast Highway or taking Big Red to a hike. It was something we had wished we could get back to.

As luck would have it, Jamie got a job offer back in Los Angeles, so we moved back. Since our returned to Santa Monica, we have been scouring Craiglist, GoWesty, and FaceBook Marketplace for a new (old) van. And by god, we found it. After months of hunting, haggling, being lead on, or meeting internet creeps; we finally found someone who cared as much as we did about Vanagons and wanted to sell us one that was worthwhile. Welcome, Big Red 2!

Finding Big Red 2 means we will get to fulfill our honeymoon dream of driving around the country again, seeing crazy new city’s, trying new food, meeting interesting new people, and seeing wherever the road takes us. If or when we ever decide to move again we will be taking her with us on our mobile home. We plan on teaching our kids how to drive in this thing. Which, is a wild idea.

See you on the road!

Let's go to Disney...

May 06, 2018 by Matt Bates

"So, did you have a good birthday?." - Me.

Recently my future in-laws were in town. Jamie and I love having familiar faces in town and love it, even more, when we get to play "host" at Disneyland. We have been on-and-off pass holders at the happiest place on Earth for the last few years. Whenever our families come to stay with us, we put them through the gauntlet of ducking and diving through crowds to get to Space Mountain on time or get the best spot for whatever the seasonal parades are.

This time around we had the additional excitement of celebrating Jamie's mother's birthday as well. Obviously, we got her the ceremonial birthday button, surprise desserts with meals and birthday wishes from cast members throughout the park all day to help bring in her new year. Disney just knows how to help you celebrate. We spent the day hearing, "Happy Birthday, April" being shouted with excitement from every direction all day. This constant excitement powers a typical day and is exemplified when it's your birthday.

But, it is not only the atmosphere that helps make any moment, dare I say, magical, but it is also the people you choose to spend time with. I consider myself a fortunate man. I am continually surrounded by people that make me more intelligent, more positive and challenge me to be a better person. I have so many incredible people in my life and appreciate it every day. Life should be incredible; it's too short not to be.

I made a very silly, and very amateur, project attached above - all shot and edited on my iPhone X while in the park. Technology is incredible. Check it out and critique!

Nothing but the best to you and your family!

Six months out...

April 08, 2018 by Matt Bates

“Holy fuck. There is still so much left to do.” - Jamie - 4/5/18

We are less than six months away from our wedding and starting to feel the pressure. We got a ton of the big stuff out of the way (huge thanks to our parents!). We got the venue, food, Jamie’s got a dress, we sent out the save the dates, we got the DJ squared away, but somehow there are still things to do. Who knew a table card could double as a take-home gift? I didn’t even know you needed to provide a take-home gift. Also, HOW much to flowers cost?

Obviously, we are going to need booze. I more than likely need a suit of some kind. . I have been told a tuxedo tee shirt won’t cut it. It’s incredible how many small details go into planning a wedding. I have to imagine it is only harder when you are planning from across the country. We are located in Los Angeles and will be getting married in Philadelphia.

There is a piece of us that wants to go through this process and have a huge celebration of our love. I love our love, so I want to celebrate it in front of as many people I care about. I am sure we will be glad we did it once all is said and done. Someone told me this might be the last time everyone is gathered to celebrate such a huge moment in your life that is just for you; it stood out to me. At the same time there is a piece of us that wishes we just went to the Grand Canyon, eloped, and then just flew back to Delco (southern suburb of Philadelphia, google it. Trust me, it’s worth it.), married and through a big ass party.

Although we are overwhelmed now I know, we will get this done. We have our checklists, spreadsheets and day planners synced through iCloud. It’s all about breaking it down to bite size chunks and setting measurable goals; just like anything else in life. Besides plenty of people have done this before with even smaller time frames. We are feeling the pressure now, but I know it will be worth it; especially since we are currently planning our honeymoon! Regardless of how we are feeling now we always end up happy together at the end of the day, its a marriage, not a one day party.

Friday 6-Pack...

April 06, 2018 by Matt Bates

Holy moly, it’s been a good week for some great jams! New, new, new The Wonder Years, Crooked Teeth, The Get Up Kids and much more! It is wild to see how far The Wonder Years have come. 'Sister Cities' marks The Wonder Years sixth studio album and a new direction for the band. From what I am hearing, a bit slower, more emotion, but still has a sense of DIY-Philadelphia grit that we have come to expect from the band.

California rocker's Crooked Teeth have also released new music this week, and I am calling it now, this band will be headlining shows across the country (and beyond) very soon. To my surprise, The Get Up Kids released new music and an upcoming tour - and it is precisely what you would expect from them. We also have some new tracks from The Overcast, Spanish Love Songs, and The Penske File.

Give this Friday 6-pack a listen now!

Stick with me. This week's list is a little all over the place, but so was the week. We have some new Hot Mulligan, which my friends and I are debating about it being the best release so far this year. We also have some new Punchline, a staple in my hometown. Good Old War also graces us with a new chill jam. This week's 6-Pack starts off soft and ends pretty hard. Like I said, its weird, I know.
